About Susan

Councilwoman Susan Starkey has over 35 years of successful experience as a public servant, community volunteer activist, and an advocate for education, environment and good government. She has many years of work experience in the public and private sectors. She was born in Wiesbaden, Germany to a U.S. Military family and has lived in Florida since 1955. She relocated to Davie with her four children in 1990. All her children went on to attend Davie schools. Council member Starkey is the proud grandmother to three beautiful granddaughters. The town has for the past seven years received an award from the Government Finance Officers Association. Proudly it meets the program criteria as a policy document, as a financial plan, operations guide and in communicating to the community and residents the budget document. This takes a team effort.

The top three priorities we must continue to address

PUBLIC SAFETY

It has always been a top priority of mine. Our residents and community need to feel safe and protected at home, school or work. We are adding School Resource Officers in all 12 Davie public schools and a new fire station out west for quicker responses. Man made and natural disasters also must be planned for and responded to by Davie’s professional personnel using advanced equipment to save lives and property.

INFRASTRUCTURE

As the town ages so does our infrastructure. Roads, drainage and traffic are of concern to most District 3 residents. I am working to get this done. I can and will manage the growth in the town. However, with projects such as the Hard Rock and high rise developments in Plantation, Davie’s traffic incidents have become unbearable. I will work with state and county agencies to improve roads and improve traffic flow. Severe rain storms have caused roads and communities to flood. Aging pipes and drains are being replaced to alleviate flooding in the SW 130th Avenue drainage area.

SUSTAINABLE BUDGET.

I continue to monitor trends as we update our budget forecasting to reflect new challenges. We hold meetings, workshops and forums with administration, employees and residents to en- sure transparency in our government budget process as we meet the needs of our town. While this process is lengthy, it is worth it! The town has received many awards acknowledging the excellent work.
